In this article, we will cover what a roof lantern is and the best roof lantern blinds for you!

A roof lantern is a daylighting architectural element. Roof lanterns are part of a larger roof and provide natural light into the space or room below. It has a similar structure to a Skylight.

Why Are They So Popular?

Roof Lanterns are rising in popularity because they allow light into a room from many different angles, even on a dull day.

What are The Best Roof Lantern Blinds We Offer?

There are two main ways to fit blinds in lantern roofs. Directly against the glass using shaped roof blinds, or across the bottom of the lantern using horizontal blinds. Both come with their advantages, so it comes down to personal preference and the layout of your roof lantern.

Horizontal Blinds

Horizontal Blinds typically involve one, two, or three large blinds (depending on the size of your lantern roof). We fit these blinds horizontally along the bottom of the lantern roof. Our neat system allows you to easily control the amount of heat and light coming into the room without having to buy a large number of blinds to cover each panel of glass. The larger-sized blinds, when shut, can lower the air volume of the room below, making the room easier to heat. Below is an example of the image above with horizontal blinds installed.

Shaped Roof Blinds

Individually fitted blinds are blinds fitted against the glass and tailored to fit your lantern roof exactly. This blind option allows you to visually keep that extra space offered by a lantern roof. You can customise which singular blind you may want down that day for more light or keep up ones of your choice to reduce glare in certain areas of your one. Due to our many years of experience, our fitters can fit your blinds around any obstructions or awkwardly shaped windows you may have.

Function and Fabrics

Other customisable features for you to choose from are your blinds’ functions and fabric.

Our most popular choice is our Duette® Fabric range. The unique cellular honeycomb construction traps air and acts as a highly effective insulating layer. Duette® Fabric also helps you stay cooler in summer and warmer in the winter.

Roller Lantern Roof Blinds are a way of covering your roof without having visible wires across the gap. They use a ‘zip’-like system to move across the space without support wires. Instead, the blind runs along with a neat frame that is fitted around the base of the lantern, and when the blinds are retracted it still gives a neat look. In the case of a Larger Lantern Roof, we may use an interim bar in the middle of the lantern. This covers the area in a way that’s neat and elegant.

Electric, Smart, and Remote Control Blinds

  • Manually retracting them–  with our easy-to-use retractable pole, you can slot it in and guide the Lantern Roof blind down manually.
  • Remote Control Blinds -Our motorised blinds system is designed to cope with more than a few blinds a single control box can operate up to 36 blinds making it perfect for individual roof blinds.
  • Battery Operated Blinds– Simply press the up or down arrow on a wall-mounted switch or handheld device.
  • Somfy® TaHoma Smart Home app – Our app for your smartphone or a smart device such as an Amazon Echo or Google Home.
All are available as pleated blinds and Duette® thermal blinds.

In summary, if you prefer the ‘larger’ look that lantern roofs add to a room, then individually shaped roof blinds might be for you. However, if you prefer the look of one neat blind, then a horizontal blind might be your best option. Both can help with glare and temperature control, given our fabric options, so if those are your main reasons for purchasing a blind then it just falls to personal choice.
