A warm, sunny day can remind us just how hot a conservatory can get. Without getting any protection installed conservatories can overheat and get extremely warm. This results in unbearable conditions and can sometimes even damage your furniture and furnishings. With many methods available, what are the best techniques to stop a conservatory from overheating?

Conservatory Blinds

Purpose designed conservatory blinds are an ideal solution to stop a conservatory from overheating. When the sun is shining into your conservatory, the majority of heat will come in through the roof. Therefore, roof blinds would be the priority to shade the conservatory before it gets too hot. If your budget allows, then side blinds would also help when the sun is lower in the sky. Many customer prefer this option, as you have the flexibility of choosing when to open and close your blinds; leaving your blinds open when you want to enjoy the beautiful outdoor views, or shutting the blinds when you want privacy or shade. There are many different conservatory blinds to choose from, all with their own unique benefits to help you create the perfect atmosphere.

Ventilation & Air Conditioning

No matter what other method you choose for shading your conservatory, ventilation is a key factor. Make sure that you open enough windows and doors, and also roof vents if you have them. This should create a cool breeze through the conservatory, particularly if you do this when it’s cooler first thing in the morning.

An air conditioning unit or ceiling fans are very common and a recommended method in keeping conservatories cool in the summer. If you have air con make sure you switch it on a prior to peak period of heat. Freestanding fans are also very good at keeping the air circulating in a conservatory.

Solid Roof

People do occasionally consider installing a solid roof to an existing conservatory. Obviously, this stops all heat coming through the roof, but it also stops natural light. Some people enjoy the positive results of a cooler conservatory and privacy created. Nonetheless, it has negatives too, one being that the conservatory will now be a lot less bright during the day with no natural light coming from the ceiling. Light in the adjacent room – the room in which the conservatory is fixed to, will also be drastically affected and much darker than before. Other than this, replacing a roof can be very expensive, with planning permission often required.

Solar Film & Inserts

Solar film and inserts are other alternatives to controlling the temperature of a conservatory. The film applied direct to the glass panel gives off a slight tinted appearance. The film will block some heat, however, it will result in making the conservatory a lot darker. Solar Inserts can also be added to a conservatory roof. They are directly inserted into the polycarbonate roof resulting in reducing both heat and UV rays. Both solar controls are very cost efficient, although, they are not compatible with every conservatory. As with a solid roof, film and inserts will also affect the amount of natural light coming into the roof, making it much darker than before.
