Conservatories give light, warmth and space but sometimes too much light or heat can be a problem. One question we often hear is: Can you fit blackout blinds in a conservatory? Here’s what you need to know.

Are blackout blinds good for a conservatory?

Technically, it is possible to fit blackout blinds into a conservatory. Some suppliers will offer them for roofs or windows but at Specialist Blinds, we don’t recommend them, nor do we sell blackout fabrics for conservatory roofs. This is because the large glass surfaces collect heat, and a blackout material traps hot air between the glass and fabric. Over time, this heat build‑up can cause stress to the glass and potentially damage it.

What are the best conservatory blinds?

We recommend light-filtering or thermal fabrics such as Duette® or a single pleat fabric. These reduce glare and heat without creating damaging hot air pockets. Special tension systems ensure a smooth glide and safe operation on roof slopes and vertical windows.

Can blackouts work in other rooms?

Blackout blinds are excellent for bedrooms or media rooms where total darkness is needed. If you choose to fit them in a somewhere other than a conservatory, blackout and dim-out fabrics can reduce glare, noise and light intrusion. External tests show blackout fabrics can reduce glare by 95%, but that same value in a glass conservatory might do more harm than good.

Why not fit Perfect Fit blackout blinds?

Perfect Fit Blinds are a popular style across UK households. However, in a conservatory, the rigid frame often clashes with slanted roofs or mixed glazed panels. We don’t offer them as roof blinds, instead crafting bespoke systems that follow your roof pitch, ensuring clean lines and full safety.

Is there a safe way to get darkness in a conservatory?

Yes. You can still use darker fabrics on side windows if you crave low light. We simply avoid roof‑mounted blackouts. Choose dark thermal fabrics for side panes and light-filter roofs for the best balance. That being said, without using blackout fabrics, you won’t achieve complete darkness. Darker fabrics on the roof and blackout fabrics on the side windows will help, but there will be some light passing through.

Do you want the perfect conservatory set-up?

Blackout blinds are great! Just not for conservatory roofs. Choose light-filtering or thermal fabrics for safety, comfort and longevity. Each blind is handcrafted in the UK expertly tensioned and tailored to the shape of your roof. You’ll get style, function and peace of mind.
