Now That Spring Is Here…

The first day of spring has passed and the clocks have gone forward; which means that we can hopefully start to see warmer and sunnier days soon. This will obviously have a big effect on any areas of the house with large areas of glazing. This includes:

• Conservatories
• Orangeries
• Or even a room with a large set of folding doors.

If you’re still within the first year of having an area like this in your home; then you won’t know exactly how the extra heat and sunlight will affect the room. But if you’ve been through a spring and summer already you will know the problems that can start during this time of year:

• Increased Heat. As the days get longer and warmer you’ll start to notice the heat building up throughout the day. While it might not get too bad now; it will keep getting worse as we move into the summer. This makes the room uncomfortably hot during most of the day. (although some people, such as those with south-facing conservatories, will already have problems)
• Increased UV. All of the extra sunlight means there’s a lot more ultra-violet light entering the room, which can start to fade and damage certain elements of your décor such as flooring and furniture. Elements that are left out in the sun all day will suffer permanent damage unless the UV light is reduced.
• Increased glare. The extra sun means that anything with a screen, such as a tablet, phone or television, can be very difficult to use; especially now that the sun will be out during the evenings.

There are many different potential solutions to these problems, but many of them involve cutting out the light entirely by replacing the glazing with something solid. This just has the effect of turning what was once a bright and sunny room into one that’s no different from any other room in the house.
