How to Keep Blinds Clean

Posted: 9 Dec 2024

With spring slowly but surely becoming summer, we enter the time of year when people use their conservatory and window blinds the most. Rooms that extend into the garden, like a conservatory, can be tough to keep clean. They attract a lot more dirt than the rest of your home, as well as a lot of insects at certain times of the year. As a result, blinds that are fitted in a conservatory will need a bit more care than standard window blinds throughout the house.

So, just how do you keep blinds clean?

Luckily there are lots of ways to make the job easy. Regular maintenance ensures your blinds will look like new throughout the spring and summer, and for many years to come.

How to Clean Window Blinds

Depending on the type of blinds you have, it is often possible to clean the fabric directly. All our Solar Design™ fabrics are fully washable, meaning that you can rinse them off in the shower or soak them in warm soapy water. Our fabrics differ from most others used in conservatory blinds, which frequently cannot be cleaned to such a degree. Even the fabrics labelled as ‘Easy Care’ can often only be wiped with warm water; anything stronger may damage the fabric. Duette® fabrics need a little more care to clean properly, but stains can be treated with a soft sponge or brush.

All our manual blinds that are fitted with our pure™ rails are designed to be easy to remove. This helps with ease of cleaning.

What About Insects Trapped Behind Blinds?

Insects can be problematic during hotter seasons, getting trapped behind the blinds and making them look unsightly. The dead insects can stain the fabric if they are not removed regularly.

Worry not: It’s easy to get any trapped insects out from behind the blinds. Simply unclip one end of the blind and shake out any debris trapped behind it. For blinds that can’t be easily removed, such as motorised blinds, we recommend using a hair dryer or air duster to blow out any dirt.

Prevention over Cure: Keep the Room Clean

Ensuring the room is maintained – especially the glass behind the blinds – then it will be a lot easier to keep the blinds clean. This is especially important if the room is prone to moisture and condensation, creating a prime environment for mould to grow on anything it can cling to – including the blinds. Mould cannot be easily removed once it starts, so prevention is always better than cure.

Can I use Bleach to Clean Blinds?

We recommend never cleaning your blinds with bleach.

Household mould is a common and bothersome issue. When the air is too humid and the temperature is too low it creates the perfect formula for mould to grow. When it grows on fabrics – particularly blinds – it can be almost impossible to remove. Attempts to do so more often than not damage the blinds permanently.

One of our salesmen recently quoted for a customer looking to replace existing Eos Pleated Blinds after they’d become damaged. Their conservatory developed a leak and, naturally, mould had grown on the fabric of the blinds. The original suppliers suggested that they try washing the blinds in soapy water – a method that would certainly do nothing to remedy the mould issue.

The couple then contacted the conservatory builder, informing them of the leak and the damage to the blinds. Extraordinarily, the builder’s decision to try to resolve the complaint was to wash the blinds in bleach!

It should hopefully go without saying that you should never wash your blinds in bleach as it will cause all sorts of problems – in this case, the cords became brittle, components started to oxidize and the blue colour of the fabric was noticeably affected by the bleach. Like this case and most others, the blinds will inevitably have to be replaced.

This is where our replacement and expertise come in – our own pure™ Pleated Blinds are much easier to clean and maintain.

Our blinds have been expertly designed to be as easy to clean and maintain as possible, ensuring they stay like new – even years after they have been fitted. We also make sure that all our customers are provided with enough information to maintain their blinds properly. Our experts demonstrate the blinds after installation and explain general maintenance tips. Our website also has a comprehensive “MyBlinds” customer area, which contains instructional videos showing how to perform simple maintenance tasks.
