Do Thermal Conservatory Blinds Improve Insulation?

Do Conservatory Blinds Improve Insulation?

Posted: 15 Oct 2021

In terms of temperature, conservatories are known for being rather volatile. They can become very warm in the summer or very cold in the winter. This is due to glass letting a lot of heat through, whether that be in or out of your room. This leaves many people looking for solutions and asking, do conservatory blinds improve insulation?

The answer is that thermal conservatory blinds can make an incredible difference to your conservatory’s temperature. With the right blinds insulating the conservatory throughout the year, you can conserve heat in winter and create shade in the summer, should you wish to do so. But with so many blind types available, which blinds are best for insulating your conservatory?

Duette® Conservatory Blinds to Improve Insulation

Duette® blinds have a honeycomb structure, which means air is trapped between the two layers of fabric. This makes them an energy efficient choice for thermal conservatory blinds. The fabric design also means it can reflect the sun, so they’re very efficient in the summer too.

One of the major benefits of our conservatory blinds is that we fit them as close to the glass as possible. Because most of the heat in a conservatory escapes and enters through the roof, by creating minimal gaps that allow the heat to escape through the glass, they offer an improved thermal benefit. Our Duette® blinds can be adapted to fit awkward spaces, offering better coverage and further improving insulation.

Remote Control Roof Blinds

pure™ Pleated Conservatory Blinds

One of the most popular blinds for conservatories, our unique pure™ Pleated Blinds are excellent for insulation. We have also designed our Solar Design™ fabric to complement our pure™ Pleated Blinds allowing them to further improve the thermal properties for conservatory blinds. This means they absorb a lot of heat, preventing it from escaping through the glass. And like our Duette® blinds, they are designed to fit close to the glass and in awkward spaces.

pure™ Pinoleum Conservatory Blinds

Popular in timber conservatories and orangeries, pure™ Pinoleum Blinds are also excellent for insulation. The natural heat absorption of wood, especially Basswood, means that wooden blinds often outperform fabrics when it comes to heat loss. However, with the addition of optional Solar Lining, pure™ Pinoleum Blinds become one of the best thermal conservatory blinds available.

Like our Duette® and pure™ Pleated Blinds, we have also designed them to fit into awkward shapes in conservatory roofs; letting as little heat through as possible.

Roller Conservatory Blinds

Although they create an area of trapped air between the blind and the glass, roller blinds are often fitted so far away that the insulation effects are diminished. Also, they usually have large gaps between each blind, letting heat and light through.

We also advise against roller blinds for conservatory roofs, which makes them unable to cover the main area of a conservatory that needs insulation.

Vertical Conservatory Blinds

Vertical blinds are very poor at insulating a conservatory but can provide basic shade when used as window blinds.

So if you are asking yourself, “Do conservatory blinds improve insulation,” the answer is yes. If you are looking for temperature control in your conservatory, there are a few options to consider. In general, the best advice would be to use made-to-measure thermal conservatory blinds that offer as much coverage as possible.

Excellent. Really helpful company. We have put blinds in the whole of our new-build house. All are thermal. Colour range was great and they went out of their way to match the colour that I wanted in the living room.

I hadn’t ever bought conservatory blinds before but this company made the process very straightforward. The fitter Richard was extremely helpful and has done an excellent job. I’m very happy with the blinds, both the quality and the fitting.
